Green Bambino Summer Diaper Bazaar

No Comments 07 May 2012

Let’s have a diaper bazaar!

We try not to call it a diaper swap since you don’t have to swap or sell used diapers to participate. Everyone is welcome whether you plan to buy, sell, trade or just browse and meet other cloth diapering parents.

Since this diaper bazaar will be held on the sidewalk outside Green Bambino, we have plenty of space to accommodate everyone. Gently used diapers, diapering accessories and baby carriers will be welcome. Please limit the amount of items you bring to what will fit on/under one table.

Sellers:

Clean, dry, odor-free gently used diapers only, please. Don’t make us do a sniff test :) . Our employees will be spot-checking diapers. Please remove from sale any they find to be defective.

You may also bring cloth diapering accessories and gently used baby carriers to sell.

Please bring your own table and chair (card table-size works best).

Bring some cash with which to make change. We don’t take a cut of your sale, and we can’t make change for everyone.

Questions about pricing your used diapers? Give us a call; we’re glad to help.

Buyers:

All sales take place between the buyer and the seller – that is, Green Bambino doesn’t take a cut. That also means you’ll need to bring plenty of cash since we can’t run the sale through the cash register.

While we all hope that the gently used diapers available for sale will be in fully functional order, please remember that Green Bambino is not responsible for the quality of your purchase.

Our staff will be on hand if you have questions about unfamiliar brands or styles.

Everyone:

Our diaper bazaars are pretty laid back and easy going. If you have questions, let us know. There is no obligation to buy – feel free to come out just to meet other cloth diapering parents and make new friends.

If the weather turns for the worse, check back to this Eventbrite listing. We’ll do our best to move the event indoors rather than postponing.

Tips & Tricks

Preparing cloth diapers for sale

2 Comments 11 May 2011

Did you know you can sell your gently used cloth diapers and recoup a lot of your diapering investment?

Lots of people do it, but there is some etiquette to follow:

  • Try to get your diapers clean and stain-free before selling.
  • You can sell stained diapers, just make sure you are very clear in any internet post about their condition.
  • Let people know if your diapers were around pets or cigarette smoke

Used prices depend on condition. Diapers in EUC (Excellent Used Condition) can sell for around 75% of the original price. Like new diapers should sell for almost full price. It’s up to you to set your prices, but we have a tip:

Start with a higher price than you think your diapers might sell for. You can always drop the price if they don’t sell, but if you price them too low, you’ll never know how much money you missed out on.

To get your diapers clean and stain free, here’s our advice:

  • Use a detergent that’s safe for cloth diapers (if in doubt, ask us.)
  • Run your normal wash routine. Consider adding 1-2 tablespoons of chlorine bleach to the bleach dispenser cup (never put bleach directly on the diapers). Run an extra hot wash with no detergent.
  • Hang the clean, wet but stained diapers out in full sun.
  • If the diapers dry before the stains are gone, put them back in the washer on a rinse and spin or quick cold wash. No detergent is needed. The sun works best with wet diapers.
  • Really tough stains could take several repititions of this process to come out. It’s worth the effort as stains will drastically reduce the price your diapers can bring.

Consider selling a large stash in several smaller bundles. Very few people are looking to buy an entire stash, but selling a large stash one single diaper at a time can be a pain. Bundling can sell more diapers at a time but keep the price reasonable for buyers.

Finally, just as Craigslist recommends, deal locally. If a transaction seems hinky, put on the brakes. You’re always welcome to meet people at Green Bambino when arranging a sale. We don’t recommend inviting people to your home to see the diapers in person.

Cloth diapers on a budget

No Comments 31 March 2011

Since starting here at Green Bambino, aka my dream job, I have heard a myriad of different reasons as to why people choose to cloth diaper.

Some do it for the environment. Some do it because the diapers are way cuter than disposables plastered with Mickey Mouse or Elmo’s face on it. And some do it just to save money.

I was one of those people who did it to save money.

While pregnant with my daughter, my loving in-laws went to this diaper warehouse to buy disposables for us. My understanding was that these diapers were being sold at pennies a piece because they came from boxes that had been ripped open and couldn’t be shelved at your neighborhood mega store.

So they brought us trash bags full of discounted generic diapers. And anyone that knows me knows one very important thing – I’m cheap. So of course, I used these free diapers on my newborn baby beacuse thinking about buying some while I had 10,000 free ones to use seemed just plain ridiculous.

But then my sweet baby girl got a rash. A bad one. And me being a new mom – don’t judge me – I just smeared some Desitin on her bottom and went about my business. When the rash not only didn’t heal but continued to get worse the light came on, the one above my head. Uh, Vanessa, she’s allergic to the diapers.

Long story short, after sinking lots of money into the trash can, we finally discovered that there was only one brand of diapers that wouldn’t make our kid break out in a hideous rash. And that brand, my friends, is the second to most expensive kind you can buy.

I had quit work to stay home with my daughter and my husband was getting $9 an hour at your friendly neighborhood home improvement mega store. We just couldn’t afford to buy these expensive disposable diapers. And that’s when I started to consider cloth.

I sank a good chunk of money (loaned money from my mama) into buying some Mother-ease fitteds and Air Flow covers. I was hooked. They were so soft and fluffy. It wasn’t beyond me to rub clean diapers on my face and sniff them on laundry day. And I swear to you, my daughter who had the most sensitive skin known to man, never had another diaper rash in her diaper lifetime.

In order to cloth diaper full time, however, I just didn’t have the money to buy new diapers online at the time. I couldn’t walk into a retail store like we can now here at Green Bambino and feel all the different diapers. I couldn’t learn the differences between pockets or fitteds and prefolds. I was still clueless.

So I turned to the internet to find my knowledge. And through resources like the mothering.com forums and Diaperswappers, I found a whole world of understanding patient women who were willing to help me learn the ins and outs of diapers. And not just diapers, but being a new mom in general.

Questions about breastfeeding, baby wearing, vaccination concerns, and gentle discipline- it was all there right at my fingertips.

Through Diaperswappers I was able to build a beautiful stash full of pockets, fitteds, prefolds, and my favorites -Thirsties diaper covers. And for cheap! Buying used diapers can be an excellent way for parents working on building a stash on a tight budget to do so.

Not only that, but once your kiddo has grown out of a diaper you can resell it online for a profit. It’s amazing and so much better than throwing a dollar every 2-4 disposables your kid poops in.

Parents on a budget, please don’t be intimidated by the price tag of cloth diapers. Because I know that if I can build a beautiful stash that has sustained me through three children in a house where one spouse is working a nearly minimum wage job, I know you can do it too.

Be smart. If you have to, buy used. If it helps, keep a running number on paper of how many diapers you change a day. Then figure up how much money you would have thrown away had those diapers gone in the trash rather than a wet bag to be washed tomorrow. The numbers will blow your mind.

Cloth diapering on a tight budget is not only possible, but easy. Trust me. I’ve been there.
