Since starting here at Green Bambino, aka my dream job, I have heard a myriad of different reasons as to why people choose to cloth diaper.
Some do it for the environment. Some do it because the diapers are way cuter than disposables plastered with Mickey Mouse or Elmo’s face on it. And some do it just to save money.
I was one of those people who did it to save money.
While pregnant with my daughter, my loving in-laws went to this diaper warehouse to buy disposables for us. My understanding was that these diapers were being sold at pennies a piece because they came from boxes that had been ripped open and couldn’t be shelved at your neighborhood mega store.
So they brought us trash bags full of discounted generic diapers. And anyone that knows me knows one very important thing – I’m cheap. So of course, I used these free diapers on my newborn baby beacuse thinking about buying some while I had 10,000 free ones to use seemed just plain ridiculous.
But then my sweet baby girl got a rash. A bad one. And me being a new mom – don’t judge me – I just smeared some Desitin on her bottom and went about my business. When the rash not only didn’t heal but continued to get worse the light came on, the one above my head. Uh, Vanessa, she’s allergic to the diapers.
Long story short, after sinking lots of money into the trash can, we finally discovered that there was only one brand of diapers that wouldn’t make our kid break out in a hideous rash. And that brand, my friends, is the second to most expensive kind you can buy.
I had quit work to stay home with my daughter and my husband was getting $9 an hour at your friendly neighborhood home improvement mega store. We just couldn’t afford to buy these expensive disposable diapers. And that’s when I started to consider cloth.
I sank a good chunk of money (loaned money from my mama) into buying some Mother-ease fitteds and Air Flow covers. I was hooked. They were so soft and fluffy. It wasn’t beyond me to rub clean diapers on my face and sniff them on laundry day. And I swear to you, my daughter who had the most sensitive skin known to man, never had another diaper rash in her diaper lifetime.
In order to cloth diaper full time, however, I just didn’t have the money to buy new diapers online at the time. I couldn’t walk into a retail store like we can now here at Green Bambino and feel all the different diapers. I couldn’t learn the differences between pockets or fitteds and prefolds. I was still clueless.
So I turned to the internet to find my knowledge. And through resources like the mothering.com forums and Diaperswappers, I found a whole world of understanding patient women who were willing to help me learn the ins and outs of diapers. And not just diapers, but being a new mom in general.
Questions about breastfeeding, baby wearing, vaccination concerns, and gentle discipline- it was all there right at my fingertips.
Through Diaperswappers I was able to build a beautiful stash full of pockets, fitteds, prefolds, and my favorites -Thirsties diaper covers. And for cheap! Buying used diapers can be an excellent way for parents working on building a stash on a tight budget to do so.
Not only that, but once your kiddo has grown out of a diaper you can resell it online for a profit. It’s amazing and so much better than throwing a dollar every 2-4 disposables your kid poops in.
Parents on a budget, please don’t be intimidated by the price tag of cloth diapers. Because I know that if I can build a beautiful stash that has sustained me through three children in a house where one spouse is working a nearly minimum wage job, I know you can do it too.
Be smart. If you have to, buy used. If it helps, keep a running number on paper of how many diapers you change a day. Then figure up how much money you would have thrown away had those diapers gone in the trash rather than a wet bag to be washed tomorrow. The numbers will blow your mind.
Cloth diapering on a tight budget is not only possible, but easy. Trust me. I’ve been there.
